Great story Amy, thanks for posting.

It is true, as a direct seller myself, I find myself often reminding my team that we are not in the business of convincing others to buy our services or even to buy into the opportunity. Our job is simply to put 100% of the proper information in front of someone to help them make an informed decision regardless if they are buying or not.

All they need is a little perspective. By understanding this and having the proper perspective on what is expected of them, the chances of success are greatly increased and the potential for failure is drastically reduced.

Your simple story has illustrated this simple concept very well.

Thank You!

Amy
I enjoyed your story. First it was interesting that you spotted a team meeting at the food court for lunch. New Leaders can meet anywhere (at little or no cost)!

Next you picked up on the essence of what we know is true. This is a people business - filled with trememdous support. People helping others succeed.

The one point, I really wanted to comment on is that you were wise enough to put your temptation to stay and listen aside and focus on your daughter. Your priorities are in order! So from mom to mom - way to go!

Best,
Barb Girson
20+ years in direct sales (independent and corporate)
PS I am a mom of 2 daughters who claim we raised them to be "empowered and infused with confidence" (their words, not mine). And after many mall lunches ...(college age now) we hear their appreciation. I owe it in part to a lifetime in direct sales. Your post reminded me of those special lunches.

What a great a "feel-good" moment to be able to know those direct sellers and their team leader were approaching things with such a positive attitude, one with focus and determination!

I also perch on the wall (in fly mode) in a similar position - that of communications for a direct selling company in Tennessee. I always have my eyes and ears open to ensure the dealers who sell our products are acting honestly and openly with other dealers and most importantly, their customers. It is always a good feeling to know the ethical standards me and my company preach are carried through.

These ethical standards come back to a strict Code of Ethics, as set forth by DSA membership. I cover this in our sales and leadership training, along with ethics, and recently revisited them on a blog I maintain.

With the economy struggling, I have no worries that those who have the courage to run their own business and stand strong during hard times will find success. While the economy will take its toll on some families, there are still 90% who are employed, many of which have strong convictions in the quality products purchased through the friends, relatives or acquaintances who take pride in servicing those needs and wants in the form of being their own boss.
